The majority of the documentaries presented here have a running time of thirty minutes or less making them ideal for screenings and discussions in a classroom setting. The one exception is the film Amazon Journal. That film was conceived to be used in conjunction with the companion book Amazon Journal; Dispatches for a Vanishing Frontier. Both the book and the film have been used by a variety of course curriculums over the course of a semester to provide a more comprehensive understanding of social conflicts in the Amazon. Unlike the other films that examine a particular society or culture, the film and book Amazon Journal (as well as their study guides) address the larger themes of cultural conflict and misunderstanding between Western European populations and indigenous societies.

Each of the films listed below, as well as the book Amazon Journal, were produced in collaboration with Brazilian and North American anthropologists who were actively involved in doing field research on the indigenous groups documented in these works. They were consulted in each phase of production and they share much of the responsibility for the focus of the particular films. Bruce Albert and Alcida Rita Ramos, both experts on the Yanomami, consulted on Contact and the film and companion book Amazon Journal. Dominique Gallois, a specialist on the Waiapi Indians, was the principal consultant on At The Edge of Conquest. Terence Turner, an anthropologist with extensive field experience among the Kayapo, consulted on all parts of the film and book dealing with that unique indigenous society.

The study guide materials presented here were done in collaboration with the anthropologists Laura R. Graham and Charlotte Cerf. Both Professors Graham and Cerf have extensive experience teaching a broad range of disciplines at The University of Iowa and Columbia University, respectively. An example of the curriculums that have incorporated the works listed in these guides include courses in Anthropology, Latin American Studies, Native American Studies, Human Rights, Environmental Studies, Nonfiction Writing, Journalism, Ethnographic Film, and Cinema Studies.
